James Dobson: Thompson Lacks Zeal!

Dobson should know, because the Focus on the Family founder has all the negative characteristics of a zealot.

Surplus Republicans and a White Knight

I really don't know who won tonight's debate, except maybe Romney who just owns the camera so completely.

Guililani is so smart, quick-on-his-feet, aggressive, able to seize an opportunity, but after 7 months of hearing the recitation of his achievements as Mayor, it is starting to wear thin.  McCain's got an impish charm and a sharp wit and excellent National Security credentials, but the bulge on the side of his head has got to go.  Tancredo is great as far as rhetoric goes, but with the ski slope nose and the almost gay diction; he's not much more than the leader of the sideshow and I'm sorry to say that, 'cause I kind of like him.

Huckabee really made a nice point about not being the source for hate, very lovely but not what we're looking for in a commander-in-chief, maybe we should elect him Pope, the first Southern Baptist Pope, that would be a hoot.  But even then it wouldn't be until the fifteenth ballot.  Brownback doesn't strike me as either: 1) intelligent, 2) sophisticated, 3) creative, or certainly not 4) electable.  I wish he would just go away, today.  Duncan Hunter is a HAWK, all caps.  I like him, you've got to like him.  But it's as if he's posing as Ronald Reagan, wearing a RR clown suit that looks uncomfortable.  He doesn't have natural charisma, or what he does have is masked by this false face he thinks he has to put on.  We learned with Gore that if you can't be yourself at that age, you can't get elected, thankfully.  Ron Paul is just f---ing annoying, he's like the crazy aunt everyone wishes would drink her sherry and go to bed.  He's got as much business being President as my Jack Russell terrier.

(That said, I'd vote for my other dog, Buster, before any Democrat.)

Then comes Fred.  I like what he had to say, he's serious, he's smart.  He's not afraid to tell it like it is.  On Leno, he stood up to the crowd and basically parroted Bush's words about the cost of defeat in Iraq.  Got a great applause line when quizzed, why are we so hated?  (He basically said and should have said: don't believe the hype.)  He had a great line on shedding more blood to liberate more people than any country in the history of the earth.  Even the French, who we thought hated us, now elected a president that wants to emulate us.

He said all the right stuff and then some in his fifteen minute podcast.  And, he seems willing to take on big challenges and he's a big guy, maybe he can do it.  All our great presidents were big men in stature or personality: Washington, Lincoln, Kennedy, Reagan, the Roosevelts.

But, what's converted me are the weaknesses of the current field of candidates.

Giuliani has got way too much baggage, including 3 wives and a current wife who looks like she shops at Penney's.  And, despite the success he had managing NY, he was a polarizing figure.  After a while, the Dems hated him (because he was so successful and he was vilified in the press, sound familiar?).  The good thing about him, he can go toe-to-toe with Hillary and giver her a run in NY, NJ, CT, PA and Michigan.  States which have been totally out of play for Republicans in recent years.  But, for me it's Judith Nathan.  I haven't met her, she could be great, but she just doesn't exude the dignity of a First Lady and the First Lady, while ceremonial is very important to the health of the country.  Look at those lovely PSAs Laura Bush did after 9-11, spot on, pitch perfect, just being herself.

Romney is so slick, handsome, intelligent, witty, he's like a tube of Pepsodent, so full of promise.  He's direct from central casting.  I can see him fly fishing with Sarkozy and Putin, all shirtless.  It would be Conservative Brokeback Mountain.  His wife, Ann, is fantastic.  But, he's a little weak on the war, I see him managing a "process" more than assembling an armada.  Maybe I'm wrong.

But his biggest weakness: he's got like 5 enormously talented and telegenic sons, all successful in their own right, so what's wrong with that?  Well none of them have served or are serving in the military.  How is that going to look when Hillary asks him: "well if you Republicans are so pro-war, why didn't you or any of your strapping, overachieving sons serve our military?"  To which his reply will be promptly forgotten.  It may not be fair, since all Democrats deride the military as being for poor people, but Romney proves the point, considering all his sons have gone to Harvard.

And, since we're at it, where's Giuliani's son?  On the golf course, I think.  The only two who have children serving are Duncan Hunter and John McCain.  Don't think the Dems won't bring back the chickenhawk slur, to plenty of effect.

So to sum up: Giuliani - many weaknesses; Romney - so damn perfect, except for military service; McCain - melanoma in waiting (I swear, his head reminds me of Otto Preminger, think Dr. Evil with elegance); the rest: a sideshow.  So, that leaves Fred.

Fred against Hillary might be a tough fight.  But against Obama, Barry would look like a fifteen year old with floppy ears.

What do you think?

Larry Craig: A Decent Man

For all of the jokes this man has endured (and I made a few: http://www.dailycomedy.com/joke/9554; http://www.dailycomedy.com/joke/9559), he showed enormous grace today.  In the face of a professional calamity which ended his career in the space of only 4 days, his response today was extremely dignified.

Democrats Ponder Worst-Case Scenario: U.S. Victory in Iraq

How will the Democrats handle a victory, I wonder?  I mean a victory for the U.S., which is a defeat for the forces of darkness, the anti-American, neo-Socialist left, a.k.a the Democratic Party.  There seems to be a lot of good news from Iraq and while it's premature to declare victory (the forces of evil may be plotting a Tet-like offensive, maybe even with the help of the Dailykos and Harry Reid).  Here are some useful posts on the subject:

Hillary Clinton Wears a Cross

Hillary Clinton was seen wearing a cross for the cameras last Fall, now she's wearing it all the time, not because of some newfound belief in God, because it burned right into her chest!

Breaking News: Neo-Copperhead Chris Matthews not Liberally Biased: No Bias at NBC Whatsoever

I'm glad that's settled.

Andrea Mitchell, the NBC reporter and wife of Alan Greenspan, who once gushed in a report: "a recent Gallup Poll shows Mrs. Clinton is the most popular woman in America. Even more popular than Oprah!"  appeared on Bill O'Reilly last night.  She seemed stunned, frozen the the headlights, when Bill Orally asked her about the existence of liberal bias at NBC.  It was as if Bill was claiming the Sun revolved around the Earth.  I see no bias whatsoever, she said.  Not even Chris Matthews, he asked?  No, he's a news analyst, I don't see any bias, she responded.

OK, so the Neo-Copperhead, Chris Matthews who slobbered all over James Webb this week as Webb bashed the President on Iraq.  Who queried of Webb, "what do you make of the President asking about your son?  (Apparently, small talk, genuine compassion, or a tidbit of intelligence from the field are not nearly possibilities.)  The same Chris Matthews who hammered George Bush, daily, on any show that would have him, throughout all of 2003, 2004 and 2005 for his justification for war.  Chris Matthews, who continued to make the case that there were no weapons of mass destruction and who wrongly argued that WMD was the only casus belli for invading Iraq.  (Not the violations of the 1991 Gulf War armistice, the cat and mouse games Saddam played with the Keystone Cop-like UN Weapons Inspectors, etc., etc.  The same Chris Matthews (former employee of the famously partisan Speaker, Tip O'Neill) who worked daily on his every television appearance to weaken America's resolve to fight the war, then asked innocently  in late 2005: "where has the support for the Iraq war gone?"

Andrea Mitchell is either an idiot, not likely, insane, probably not, on mind altering medication, possibly or wants to maintain cocktail party cred: bingo.  I don't think I'll buy her book, whatever the title is.

Clintonian Rage: No Accident

Anybody that thinks Clinton's performance on Fox News Sunday was not coldly calculated, was born yesterday.  Here's my take:

Clinton effectively refocused the debate to HIM and Al Queda away from Bush and Iraq.  His point: though he may have been ineffectual, he was focused on the right enemy.  The question remains though, can the Dems convince (read that: delude) Americans into thinking they would boldly pursue any enemy considering their lukewarm relationship with the military.  Thank God the blogosphere is here, otherwise they'd get away with it in a walk.  Developing.....

Hang Tough Pope Benedict

It is essential that the Pope not wither under the criticism or crumble on the altar of political correctness.  Islam has violence woven into it's very core.  Where Jesus spoke of love and forgiveness, Islam speaks of the sword.  Where Jesus was focused on the kingdom "not of this world," Mohammed was consumed with earthly power and wealth.

Denying this truth would be a sin in the real sense of that word.  Paraphrasing Bush, if lying is not a sin, than sin has no meaning.  This might be the moment many have waited for when we call a spade a spade and not a heart or club.  We should not shrink from the fight of ideology.  We should stand firm in our beliefs.  We should not deny our faith to save our earthly body as that reporter from Fox News did a few weeks ago.  Now is the time to stand firm, toe-to-toe with the barbaric aggressors who kill in the name of a false prophet.  We should not be afraid, they should be.  They should tremble at the sight of our soldiers who tattoo themselves with the psalms and the sign of the cross.

This is a clash of civilizations, let us not quake in fear.  Let's take the fight to the enemy.  This enemy of civilization, of creation must be defeated for humanity to survive.

This Pope is an intellectual and, while sensitive, may be more assertive than his predecessor.  He may be more interested in resurrecting the Church in its traditional home, Western Europe.  That effort is desperately needed.  The Church has become irrelevant to educated Westerners.  Where JPII focused on "making the numbers" that is, the growth of the Church in LDCs, this Pope may try to lead in the heart of Europe.  I hope so.

Just a note from an ex-Catholic.  I converted to Protestantism just as my ancestors converted to Christianity.  I felt strongly that I didn't need an intermediary between myself and my God.  I was also alienated by the previous Pope.

The Long War

The conventional wisdom of the recent Israeli cease fire is a net negative for the president.  However, he may have a longer view of things in mind.  Specifically, he may be forcing a showdown with Iran; calming the waters in order to keep Teheran in the world's sites.

August 22nd is the day the Mullahs have promised to answer the Security Council --- likely with another provocation.  Bush may have pressured Ohlmert to fold in order to make Iran's game more transparent.

Any thoughts?

The Elephant in the Living Room

No country can survive with a 50% High School graduation rate in its major cities.  It is a national disgrace and should be a rallying cry for the Republican party.  Socialized education is a giant failure

Learn from the Democrats: Hate Doesn't win Elections

We've got to be careful not to focus on hating Hillary, it's not going to be enough to defeat her.  Plus, what's so un-American about $6,000 hair and makeup

Let's learn from the Dumb-ocrats: hate doesn't win elections

Republican focus on a candidate's coiffure won't defeat the Hillary hordes.
