It is essential that the Pope not wither under the criticism or crumble on the altar of political correctness. Islam has violence woven into it's very core. Where Jesus spoke of love and forgiveness, Islam speaks of the sword. Where Jesus was focused on the kingdom "not of this world," Mohammed was consumed with earthly power and wealth.
Denying this truth would be a sin in the real sense of that word. Paraphrasing Bush, if lying is not a sin, than sin has no meaning. This might be the moment many have waited for when we call a spade a spade and not a heart or club. We should not shrink from the fight of ideology. We should stand firm in our beliefs. We should not deny our faith to save our earthly body as that reporter from Fox News did a few weeks ago. Now is the time to stand firm, toe-to-toe with the barbaric aggressors who kill in the name of a false prophet. We should not be afraid, they should be. They should tremble at the sight of our soldiers who tattoo themselves with the psalms and the sign of the cross.
This is a clash of civilizations, let us not quake in fear. Let's take the fight to the enemy. This enemy of civilization, of creation must be defeated for humanity to survive.
This Pope is an intellectual and, while sensitive, may be more assertive than his predecessor. He may be more interested in resurrecting the Church in its traditional home, Western Europe. That effort is desperately needed. The Church has become irrelevant to educated Westerners. Where JPII focused on "making the numbers" that is, the growth of the Church in LDCs, this Pope may try to lead in the heart of Europe. I hope so.
Just a note from an ex-Catholic. I converted to Protestantism just as my ancestors converted to Christianity. I felt strongly that I didn't need an intermediary between myself and my God. I was also alienated by the previous Pope.
